As reported by The Daily Mail, Hibernian have admitted that they’ll be fielding bids for Celtic target John McGinn during this month’s transfer window.
What’s the story?
This month is a chance for Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers to refresh a tired looking squad and part of that strategy will likely be identifying the best home grown talent available to the club that can arrive in Glasgow and compete for first team places.
One such player could be Scotland midfielder John McGinn, according to the Daily Mail.
The paper say that Rodgers is a known admirer of the Hibs star, with the Edinburgh side’s chief executive Leeann Dempster admitting that they’ll be considering bids for him this month should they arrive.
As quoted by The Daily Mail, Dempster said:
There was an offer in the August transfer window and John has gone from strength to strength in the subsequent period. It’s inevitable that when you have good people either working for you, or playing at a club, that there is going to be interest. It is always about weighing up our league position and what is best for us in the short and medium-term. We don’t know what the next month will bring, we don’ t have a crystal ball we might get tested. If we are tested then we will carefully consider it.
Given those comments, it appears the player would cost a fair bit more than the £1.5m they were reported to have rejected for him last summer.
The Hoops face competition for his signature too with the report also stating that West Ham boss David Moyes is considering lodging a bid for the former St Mirren man.
Is he good enough for Celtic?
McGinn has been in excellent form in the Scottish Premiership this season, an integral part of newly promoted Hibernian’s bid to achieve European football in their first season back in the top flight.
He has particularly impressed in matches against Celtic themselves, scoring twice in the first 2-2 draw between the sides at Celtic Park earlier this season and helping his side to another at Easter Road last month.
The Hoops already have a talented midfield with players like Olivier Ntcham and Stuart Armstrong both young enough to be mainstays for years to come but McGinn undoubtedly has a bright future ahead himself and can help shape that midfield at Celtic Park.
With Scott Brown coming towards the latter stages of his career, Celtic need new homegrown players to lead their midfield battle and McGinn has shown he’s a contender to do that.
